Clean Water for Malawi has drilled 61 wells in Malawi, since we began at the end of 2010. 18 wells were paid for with a grant from The Rotary Foundation and the Rotary Clubs in the Jackson area, and 43 wells were paid for by individuals and local churches. We finished drilling the first round of Rotary wells in November of 2011, and since then have raised the money and started drilling another 18 wells through Rotary in the Lilongwe area.
In addition to our continued drilling in the central region near Lilongwe, we are now drilling wells in the northern region of the country near Mzuzu. We have drilled 9 wells around Mzuzu so far. We plan to submit a third grant application to Rotary so we can drill 18 more wells in that area next year.
One water well costs $3,500 and provides clean water for an average of 347 people. With approximately 50 families in each village, that is about $70 per family, or $10 per person, for each well.
